The main indications for endoluminal metallic stent placement in the colon and rectum are for:

1) Temporary colonic decompression in patients with acute malignant obstruction as a “bridge” to elective surgery.

2) Long-term colonic decompression in patients with obstruction due to an unresectable colonic carcinoma.
